- Course objectives
- System and evolution of plants is one of the introductory disciplines of biological study. The subject is intended for students of systematic biology and education. Its main aims are: foundations of higher plant morphology, survey of classification methods of the higher plants, basic principles of botanical nomenclature, and mechanisms of plant evolution. A survey of higher plant divisions is presented according to the main morphological features. Detailed attention is focused on the APG classification of the higher plants. Practical plant use is also mentioned. The historical development of systematic botany is included in the introductory lectures. A geohistorical survey of plant evolution at the Czech, European, and world scales is presented in the final lectures.
- Syllabus
- 1. Cormus, polycormon, classification of growth-forms and life-forms. Phylogeny of organs: telome theory, phylogeny of flowers. 2. Morphology of plant organs: root, stem, leave, flower (+ types of pollination), fruit, spreading of diaspores. 3. Historical survey of plant systematics and classification methods: from Theophrast to APG classification, basic terms (taxon, species etc.); 4. general principles of botanical nomenclature, phylogenic approach: mechanisms of species development. 5. Divisions Bryophyta (Marchantiopsida, Anthoceropsida, Bryopsida), Rhyniophyta (Rhyniopsida: Cooksoniidae and Rhyniidae, Zosterophyllopsida: Zosterophyllales and Asteroxylales, Trimerophytopsida), 6. Divisions Lycopodiophyta (Lycopodiopsida, Selaginellopsida, Isoëtopsida) and Psilotophyta; 7. Divisions Equisetophyta (Cladoxylopsida, Hyenopsida, Pseudoborniopsida, Sphenophyllopsida, Equisetopsida) and Polypodiophyta (Ophioglossidae, Zygopteridiidae, Maratiidae, Polypodiidae, Marsileidae, Salviniidae); 8. Gymnosperms: divisions Progymnospermophyta, Pteridospermophyta, Cycadophyta (Cycadopsida, Cycadeideopsida), Pinophyta (Cordaitopsida, Gingkoopsida, Pinopsida), Gnetophyta (Gnetidae, Ephedridae, Welwitschiidae); 9. Phylogenetically basal angiosperms: Amborellaceae, Nymphaeaceae, Illiciaceae, Rafflesiaceae, Laurales, Magnoliales and Piperales; 10. Monocots: Acorales, Alismatales, Liliales, Asparagales, Dioscoreales, Zingiberales and Commelinoids (Arecales, Commelinales, Zingiberales, Bromeliales and Poales); 11. Phylogenetically basal eudicots: Ranunculales, Proteales, Dilleniaceae, Vitaceae, Caryophyllales, Santalales and Saxifragales; 12. Rosids: Geraniales, Malpighiales, Oxalidales, Rosales, Fabales, Cucurbitales, Fagales, Myrtales, Brassicales, Malvales and Sapindales); 13. Asterids (Cornales, Ericales, Boraginaceae, Gentianales, Lamiales, Solanales, Apiales, Asterales, Dipsacales); 14. Survey of plant evolution in geological history.
