The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
There are three thematic parts: 1-7 funfamentals of bionomy and evolution of parasitic arthropods, 8-9 adaptaion of arthropods to parasitism and its relationship to their hosts, 10-11 significance of arthropods like a vectors and pathogens.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction: systematic position of parasitic arthropods. Crustacae: Bionomy, basic characteristics and classification. 2. Acarina: Bionomy, classification and evolution of Parasitiformes and Acariformes. 3. Insecta: Basic characteristics. Heteroptera: Basic characteristics, evolution of parasitism and bionomy of individual parasitic groups. 4. Phthiraptera: Basic characteristics, evolution of parasitism and bionomy of individual parasitic groups. 5. Diptera „Nematocera“: Basic characteristics, evolution of parasitism and bionomy of typical hematophagous forms. 6. Diptera „Brachycera“: Evolution of hematophagous and endoparasitic groups, bionomy, characteristics and functional morphology of selected groups of parasitoids. 7. Siphonaptera: Basic characteristics and bionomy. 8. Origin of hematophagy and strategy of hematophagous insects. Bionomy and basic adaptations for hematophagy. Functional morphology of hematophagous forms. 9. Adaptation of tissue and intestinal parasites, parasite-host interactions, regulation of parasite population, host immunity. Basic defence mechanisms of arthropods, susceptibility and resistance. 10. Parasite-host co-evolution, origin of specificity, methods of study of co-evolution. Internal environment of arthropods like environment for microorganism (anatomy, physiology, specifity, development, pathogenity, pathogen transmission). Bionomy and ecology of vectors (epidemiology, zoonosis, antropozoonosis, synantropy). Population biology of vectors and its biological importance for pathogen transmission. 11. Most important parasitic diseases (agens, developmental cycles, geographical distribution). Recommended literature Buchar J., Ducháč V., Hůrka K., Lellák J. 1995: Klíč k určování bezobratlých.
