Course objectives
Students will be familiarised with the basic concepts and terms of the taxonomy of bacteria in the frame of this course. They will be able to understand contemporary classification, nomenclature and identification of bacteria (domain Bacteria) important in the human clinical microbiology. On the basis of the acquired information the students will be able to interpret and understand data obtained during typing and identification of bacterial strains and allocate these strains in the frame of the current phylogenetic system.
Syllabus
  • The first part of the course will deal with basic taxonomical terms (classification, nomenclature and identification) and contemporary approaches to characterization of bacterial species and their phylogenetic delineation (1 lecture). During further lectures current taxonomy of bacterial genera/species important in human clinical microbiology and belonging to the phyla Proteobacteria (5 lectures), Firmicutes (3 lectures) Actinobacteria (3 lectures) and further clinically important groups (1 lecture) will be discussed.
