Course objectives
COURSE OUTLINES THE PURPOSE OF THIS COURSE IS TO PROVIDE AN OVERVIEW OF APPLIED NATURAL SCIENCES LABORATORY TECHNIQUES TO THE ANALYSIS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL MATERIALS. PROMINENT TOPICS IN ARCHAEOMETRY AND MICROARCHAEOLOGY INCLUDE DATING METHODS, ARTIFACT SOURCE (I.E., PROVENANCE) ANALYSIS, MICROSCOPY, STABLE ISOTOPE GEOCHEMISTRY, AND RESIDUE ANALYSIS. SINCE THIS IS AN INTRODUCTION COURSE, COURSE TIME WILL BE DIVIDED BETWEEN REGULAR LECTURES AND TOPICAL READINGS. COURSE DESCRIPTION DEFINITION OF MICROARTEFACTS. VARIETIES OF MICROARTEFACTS AND THEIR ORIGIN STABILITY OF MICROARTEFACTS IN VARIOUS SEDIMENTS ANALYTICAL METHODS APLLIED IN STUDIES OF ANCIENT STONES, MORTARS, PLASTERS, CERAMICS CASE STUDIES: INTERPRETING THE RESULTS REVEALED BY ANALYTICAL METHODS IN DIFFERENT MICROARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDIES LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION ENGLISH MATERIALS PRIMARY OR REQUIRED BOOKS/READINGS: S. Learning outcomes
COURSE OBJECTIVES TO UNDERLINE THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MICROARTEFACTS AS AN INFORMATION IN ARCHAEOLOGY. MAKING STUDENTS ACQUAINTED WITH THE POSSIBILITIES OF EXACT SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN ARCHAEOLOGY. EMPHASIS LIES ON THE STUDY OF ARTEFACTS, SITES AND ARTISANAL PROCESSES FROM A CHEMICAL AND MATERIAL SCIENCE PERSPECTIVE. PREREQUISITES BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS
