- The aim of this course is to give the students the paleopathology basis. It gives students the keys to differentiate normal variability of the bone structures from the taphonomical damages and the pathological lesions. It aims to teach them the descriptive approach leading to a positive diagnosis and differential diagnoses. Teaching will be focused on the groups of pathologies most represented on ancient remains. Each courses will also be used to introduces important concepts.
- Learning outcomes
- After the theoretical class and the practice activities, the students will be able to [1] describe elementary bone pathological lesions, [2] group bone lesions together to give a probable diagnosis, [3] recognize taphonomical signs, [4] recognize fractures, arthrosis, infections, rickets. diseases.
- Syllabus
- [1] The bone porosities dilemma: growth, taphonomy, pathology, 27/05/2023 (from 9:00 to 1:00 pm).
- [2] Trauma and ageing bone signs: the osteological paradox, 28/05/2023 (from 9:00 to 1:00 pm).
- [3] Infections and deficiencies: variability in health, 29/05/2023 (from 9:00 to 1:00 pm).
- Teaching methods
- Theoretical training in form of presentations accompanied with practical training on archeological human skeletons, 3D virtual models of diverse paleopathological cases, 3D printed cases of rickets, syphilis, tuberculosis • The course is taught in English.
- Assessment methods
- No exam or test is planned at the end of the course, however, presence is mandatory for the three days from 9 to 1 pm (Attending sheet and daily signature).
