Introduction
Academic reading skills are essential for the success of any undergraduate student. Whether you are studying science, arts, or engineering, being able to read and understand academic texts is crucial for passing exams and writing research papers. This online course is designed to help undergraduate students develop their academic reading skills, and to equip them with the knowledge and tools necessary to read and comprehend academic texts with ease.
The purpose of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the various elements of academic reading, including critical reading, effective reading, and text comprehension. The course will teach students how to take notes, summarise texts, understand citation norms, and build their vocabulary. Additionally, the course will explore the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in academic reading.
The course consists of six chapters, each covering a different aspect of academic reading. The first two chapters focus on effective reading and text comprehension, teaching students how to speed-read, scan, skim texts, helping students understand the main ideas and themes of academic texts. The third chapter will teach students how to take notes effectively, and how to summarise texts. It also focuses on citation norms, teaching students how to reference and cite sources correctly. The fourth chapter covers vocabulary building. In the fifth chapter five, students will learn about critical reading and how to evaluate texts for validity and reliability, and the sixth chapter covers the use of ICT in academic reading.
By the end of this course, students will have a comprehensive understanding of academic reading skills and will be equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to read and comprehend academic texts with ease. Whether you are a first-year student or a final-year student, this course is the perfect starting point for enhancing your academic reading skills.
