Introduction

Dear students!

This semester we cover units 8 to 15 from Intelligent Business Upper Intermediate. To finish English I/2 successfully and obtain credits, you will need to:

  • be present 80% of the time, meaning you can miss 4 lessons for no reason (any more and you have to bring an official note - from a doctor or a sports event organizer etc. - to the study department). People who miss 5 or 6 lessons without proper apology, will receive extra work. People who miss more than 6 lessons will not be allowed to write the test.
  • be active in the lessons and do your homeworks.
  • present a product or company in class.
  • obtain at least 60 points in the credit test (taking place on 20 May).

Presentations

As a seminar work this semester you will create and perform a five-minute presentation about a product or a company (real or fictional).

Your presentation will include:

  • the performance itself,
  • a powerpoint presentation to visually accompany your talk (bring it on a portable device, there will be a notebook we will use for all presentations),
  • a quiz on the subject of your presentation, including 3 - 5 questions about important things you mentioned (to be given at the end, after Q&A), on a handout that you will distribute to your audience.

To create and perform a good presentation, you can think of the points we mentioned in the lesson, or use some useful hints from the document below.

EXPONENTIAL GROWTH

“Anyone who believes exponential growth can go on forever in a finite world, is either a madman or an economist.” ~Kenneth Boulding, Economics professor

If you want to know more about the state of energy resources in the world in general (and specifically in the US), you can have a look at the video - called "Arithmetic, Population and Energy" - linked below. It's probably not really the most important video you'll ever see, but it's still pretty interesting. However, it's over an hour long (it comes in 8 parts, the link to the following part is always under the video window), so only watch it if you have nothing else to do for a while ;-) It also has quite a few conditionals and comes with visual support, so you might use it to practise your English skills.

It's not homework, it's just for people who are interested.
