Team projects
The purpose of the team project is to perform business process analysis in a real organization (preferably in an international environment). For your projects, you need to compose teams and apply the knowledge and skills you learned in class.
We do not prescribe any template for projects. The project report should look like a report from a business analyst that solved a problem in an organization. You choose the length and the structure. However, you should follow the logic of business process analysis in the reports. You can get inspiration for the structure in the following text:
- Executive summary of the report
- Description of the problem and its context including a description of the organization, business unit, or team.
- Description of methodology – how did you solve the problem, retrieve and analyze data, which software did you use, how did you spread the work among team members, etc.
- Data you gathered and results of their analysis - e.g., strategy analysis, process documentation.
- Problem solution and evaluation of your suggestions (i.e. calculate the benefit for the company)
You can earn a maximum of 70 points that are connected to projects:
- progress reports = 5 (1.5, 1.5, 2);
- project draft presentation = 10;
- project report = 40 (minimum of 20);
- project defense = 15.
The project report will be assessed according to the following criteria.
- The overall quality of the text
- Reasoning and argumentation of your choices
- The precision of descriptions and analysis
- Compliance of your diagrams with standards (BPMN, Value Chain, etc.)
- Depth of problem solution
- Project management success
Each criterion will be assessed from 0% to 100% by each teacher and the final evaluation will be an average of averages of all the criteria by all the teachers. If you will not get the needed minimum of 20 points, you will need to improve your report and submit it again.
- Quality of delivery (visuals, language, time limit) - will be assessed by teachers (2/3 of assessment) and other students (1/3 of assessment);
- Ability to answer questions from the audience (assessed only by teachers).
During the semester, you will have the option to fulfill tasks connected to the projects. They are divided into 6 stages.
Team Composition
After the first class, you need to be a member of one team. The team will work on class assignments, progress reports, and final projects. The list of the teams could be found here.
Progress Report 1
The purpose of this report is to show, how you think about your project, the activities needed to be done, and the timeline of the activities. The first progress report will contain the following information:
- Members of your team based on the table in Teams
- Possible organizations you can choose from.
- Activities you will perform during your project and who will be responsible for them.
- Timeline for your project
For the first report, it is beneficial to use the theory of the BPM Life-cycle.
You will present the report based on the schedule of the course and you will get feedback on the content. You can earn a maximum of 1.5 points.Progress Report 2
This report will focus on providing information about the chosen organization, and the problem you want to solve. You should update the timeline of your project and the responsibilities of team members. The second progress report will contain the following information:
- Organization description (text and diagrams, e.g. Org chart, Value chain).
- Assessment of BPM maturity of the organization.
- The description of the problem you want to solve; if needed, you can formulate hypotheses.
- BPMN representation of the process that will be part of the solution.
For the second report, it is beneficial to use the process discovery and modeling topics.
You will present the report based on the schedule of the course and you will get feedback on the content. You can earn a maximum of 1.5 points.
Progress Report 3
The final progress report will focus on process discovery, analysis, and redesign. You should update the timeline of your project and the responsibilities of team members. The progress report (document) will contain the following information:
- BPMN representation of the as-is process (updated after the feedback from Progress Report 2)
- Process data available and methodology of the analysis (i.e., tools and techniques of the analysis)
- Insights on the weaknesses of the process and impact of these weaknesses on process performance (if delivered)
- The proposed solution to the problem/method of process redesign (if delivered)
- BPMN representation of the to-be process (if delivered)
Keep the progress report presentation within 5 minutes. Choose one problem you have in your project and include it in the presentation so you can get feedback from Mikhail
For the third report, it is beneficial to use the process (quantitative, qualitative) analysis and redesign topics.
You will present the report based on the schedule of the course and you will get feedback on the report's content. You can earn a maximum of 2.0 points for this activity.
Draft Presentation
You will present drafts of your projects (everything you have done so far) in the last class of the semester. The assessment will mirror the assessment of the final report and defense (see above).
If the assessment of your drafts will be higher than 50% of possible points from the final report and you will also have enough points to earn credits for the course, you can choose not to submit the project for final defense and you will get the mark.
Final defense
The date of the final defense will be set during the end of the teaching part of the semester or in the draft presentation session. We prefer that the decision will be done by students (of course regarding teachers' availability).
