Week 4 - Head UV Unwrap and Texturing in Substance Painter
Outline
- UV unwrapping, texture painting and projection
- using Substance Painter to create advanced textures
- individual work on "Head" assignment
At this week your head should have eyes, expressions (Shape Keys) and now it is time to do unwrap and texture. You already know how to do it.
UNWRAPPING
Unwrapping the Head
Before you start working on the texture of your head, it has to be unwrapped. You need to place the seams to avoid the cut running down in the middle of the face. Make a seam around the ears, mouth cavity. These will be separate islands in the UV texture. You can also cut out the inside of the eyes. The head can be then cut in a couple of ways as you see here in the picture. Fewer cuts mean that the 3d organic form flattened has more uneven 2d representation in UV maps, more cuts are more precise. Simply put, all of these examples work just fine, the more details you want to make - the more cuts are likely.
Also, you can change the size of the island (as Blender calls the pieces in UV representation). By enlarging one island you allocate more area for texture resolution - thus more detail. Of course, we do not need to have the inner parts of the eyes and mouth the same quality as the face. But, make sure that the difference of the proportion is not on the visible surface of the head (means seams between two islands with different sizes) - that cost troubles in creating texture even if you apply three-planar UV projection.

PAINTING
By now you should have your model unwrapped and know enough from the spider bot tutorial to create your own textures so it is time to paint your head. See tips in this pdf. Also, keep in mind that painting various types of skins is not the right and wrong approach - there is a wide-open space for your creativity. It is more about understanding what kind of material skin is and how to go about putting it in layers in Substance Painter. And that applies to all kinds of crazy reptilian and alien skins as well :-)

Animation
Now you can start to create a short animation of your head with eyes and texture. Please, keep in mind that you can animate camera and lights as well to make your animation more dynamic and interesting.
The animation should show a change of facial expression (shape keys). Duration: at least 5 seconds
b. framerate: 25fps
c. resolution: at least 1280x720
d. format: .mp4 with “reasonable” bitrate.
Students' work from last year:
You can also animate textures to help the expression: angry expression --> more red cheeks and ears etc.
