What’s new in the EU I.

Brexit negotiations (Sychra) - November 21

The EU is finalizing negotiations on Brexit. We are still waiting for the final agreement between the EU and the UK (at the time of our seminar, we may already know it). In our seminar, we should focus on the assessing the current state of the negotiations.

At the heart of our interest will be following questions: How should be addressed the most controversial bargaining points? Especially the border with Northern Ireland, the length of the temporary transition period, the EU citizens’ rights, the future trade deal between the EU and the UK? How do you access the EU strategy during the negotiations? What are the consequences of a “no deal” scenario?
A hard brexit would hit both sides, the UK and the EU as well. Nevertheless, some EU countries will be affected more than others. Try to think how much (and why) would be affected your home country.

There has been a huge amount of Brexit literature up to now. Feel free to browse it. This is a brief overview of the key points during the negotiations and the last, much-discussed British proposal from Chequers. You can follow the EU reaction and the last statement of the British PM on the state of play in the negotiations. For academic views on Brexit issues follow this link. Just for those, who are deeply interested in the topic (voluntary): the complete White Paper of British government (the Chequers deal).
UPDATE: this is the last Draft Agreement on the Withdrawal of the UK agreed on 14 November 2018 (as summarised here) and the European Commission Fact Sheet on Protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland

See you in November!
