Radical (non)approach to renewable energy: Poland (Anežka Konvalinová) 23. 11. 2021
Main
topic: What is
the future of coal phase-out?
Context: Social and economic aspects of
climate policies
Outline: Driven
by climate change concerns, the EU is committed to decarbonizing its energy
mix, with coal being the primary victim of this trend. The EU's increasingly
ambitious climate policies are putting more pressure on Member States to
significantly transform their energy sectors and deal with the socio-economic
impacts of the transition. This lecture will focus on what happens when the
state takes a 'back seat' and what the connotations of this may be in a
regional and European perspective.
Sources: Read the following two articles that address the transition away from coal: the article by Thomas Spencer et al. on the political-economic and labor law aspects of coal phase-out, and the article discussing the transition away from coal from a climate justice perspective by Benjamin Brown and Samuel J. Spiegel. Finally, try to summarize the main arguments in the cross-border dispute between the Czech Republic and Poland over the Turow mine. This podcast by Radio Prague International can help you do that.
