Greenbaum & Quirk, chapter 13 – Coordination – Revision – KEY

1. What type of coordination do the following sentences represent?

I find Tim really nice but Jack a total bore. = complex coordination, combination of units: O+C but O+C

Lucy cleaned the windows and washed the dishes. = simple coordination, coordination of predicates

Tim, as well as his friend Jack, was missing. = quasi coordination

Come and see me in my office later today. = pseudo coordination, idiomatic structure (come to see...)

I bought apples, oranges, avocados, and plums. = simple sentence, coordination of noun phrases

She sang and sang and sang. = pseudo coordination, continuation or repetition (kept singing)

Susan looks attractive, and Alice intelligent. = complex coordination, gapping = medial ellipsis in the second conjoin

Jack can be really annoying, and Peter, too. = appended coordination, elliptical clause is appended to a previous clause

There were books and books and books everywhere. = pseudo coordination, a large quantity (a lot of books)

The summer had come at last, and we could go swimming. = simple coordination, coordination of clauses

She walked more and more slowly. = pseudo coordination, continuing increase in degree

There are lawyers and lawyers. = pseudo coordination, different kinds (good and bad lawyers)

Most students will have left for home or gone to the pub. = simple coordination, coordination of predications

2. Explain the difference between combinatory and segregatory coordination of NPs.

Jack and Lucy are responsible and reliable. = segregatory, can be paraphrased by clause coordination: Jack is responsible and reliable, and Lucy is responsible and reliable.

Tim and Mary are not the same age. = combinatory (because of the comparison “the same age”), the conjoins (Tim and Mary) function in combination with respect to the rest of the clause, and they cannot be paraphrased by clause coordination (Tim is the same age, and Mary is the same age.)
