Intercultural Communication in English
Week 7 - CULTURE/s and LITERATURE
This week, we are going to discuss the relation between LITERATURE and CULTURE/s. Ideally, join our Facebook group on Wednesday at 10,
To get started, think of a book you are reading right now (have read recently):
Did you read it in your language /in English?
Was this the original language of the text?
When translating the book into a different language, what would be really difficult?
You can record a short video introducing the book and explaining a bit about its use of langugage, background culture, etc.
Also, you can read the following opening lines and try to guess what books they introduce:
- This is me when I was 10 years old.
- "See who?", asked the old man in the gatehouse cupping his ear.
- Oh yes, we´re here.
- Someone must have been telling lies about Josef K.; he knew he had done nothing wrong but, one morning, he was arrested.
