Human suffering is, unfortunately, a universal experience that transcends race, gender, class, age, and many other identities, including one’s culture and country of origin. Yet, how different countries define and respond to social issues that contribute to such suffering varies dramatically depending on how various disciplines and countries conceptualize the problems and develop prevention and intervention strategies and resources to address such issues across multiple levels of society. Social workers, psychologists, nurses, and other helping disciplines are particularly well-equipped to handle social problems across organizations due to their education and training to understand and intervene in issues that impact individuals, groups, and communities. This course will introduce students to how various helping professionals from different countries and disciplines address social problems and will be taught by an international team of professionals from other fields to explore and understand social issues that directly and indirectly impact human suffering across the globe.

This course will be a combination of asynchronous learning modules and in-person at TRC and will include a mixture of in-class sessions, as well as field trips around Rome, and also include local experts who will come to the class and speak about the various identified class topics. In this course, students will: 1/ Engage with social workers from different countries 2/ Explore how various countries define and practice social work 3/ Engage with faculty and students from different countries 4/ Discover different ways countries, and in particular Italy, the Czech Republic, Korea, Peru, and the US, address social issue 5/ Create a unique project designed to address a social issue within society.
