Course objectives
The main aim of the study course Social pedagogy is to deepen and extend the knowledge of problems related to social integration of national, ethnic and religious minorities, individuals with different sexual orientation, sexual identity impairment, health handicap, etc., on the background of classical, modern and contemporary socio-pedagogical theories. At the end of the course, students will be able to find empirical data on various phenomena of social integration and consider the adequacy of measures within social pedagogy, social policy and social work that apply to them.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to: define the basic concepts of social pedagogy; identify and describe groups at risk of social exclusion; to design and clarify appropriate socio-pedagogical measures to eliminate social exclusion and endorse social integration; assess the adequacy of social policy and social work measures related to the social integration.
Syllabus
  • Current paradigms of social pedagogy; basic concepts (social exclusion, social inclusion, social cohesion; discrimination, xenophobia, racism, intolerance, anti-Semitism, extremism, etc.).
  • Social integration of immigrants; reasons of immigration (economic, political, religious), statistics, current problems of immigration - crime, discrimination, assimilation, economic impacts; ethical aspects.
  • Roma integration - Roma community in the Czech Republic and its specifics; spatial segregation, housing issues, unemployment, education; Roma Integration Strategy for 2020.
  • Brno "Bronx".
  • Social exclusion of seniors - demographic data on seniors, psychological and physical changes associated with ageing, health status as a determinant of social exclusion; the economic, social and political dimension of social exclusion; social integration of seniors.
  • Social exclusion of lesbians, gays and bisexuals - sexual orientation, coming out, sexual prejudice, discrimination and its consequences, legislation, gay and lesbian movements and organizations.
  • Social exclusion of transgender people - sexual identity disorders; transsexuality, transformation of Female to Male (FtM), Male to Female (MtF), comming out, legislation; transvestism.
  • LGBT - discussion with expert and/or lesbian or gay people.
  • Social exclusion of people with disabilities and disadvantages - selected problems.
  • Poverty and low income - the theory of poverty, the causes of poverty (political, economic, social, demographic, environmental), the consequences of poverty; poverty in the Czech Republic.
  • Homelessness - definition, causes, forms; problems of homelessness; concepts of prevention and solving of homelessness, projects to help people without home.
  • Prostitution - forms of prostitution, female prostitution, male prostitution, child prostitution; situation in the Czech Republic, legal aspects; pimping.

Teaching methods
Lecture and seminar. The teaching will be based on discussion methods, problem solving method, work with audiovisual materials, discussion with experts, excursions, etc. The students are expected to prepare systematically and actively participate in the preparation of the seminars.
Assessment methods
For taking the exam may apply students who (1) meet the 75% attendance (i.e. attendance of at least 8 times per semester, credit week is not counted); (2) prepare an active entry into the seminar and present it. The exam will take place in a colloquial form (the scope for the examination is identical to the syllabus and study material available in the ELF study system). Requirements and classification are described in detail in the ELF study system.
