Cíle předmětu
The course will focus on explaining the stylistic, narrative, and thematic features of several significant European cinematic trends and movements of the 1910s and 1920s. Each trend was trying to find their own way of grasping film as an autonomous art form. The lessons will consist of two parts. The first part will be an introductory lecture that captures the individual trend in the historical, theoretical, and creative context of film development as an art form. For clarification and exemplification many audiovisual samples will be used. The second part will be a screening of a particular representative film that refines the interpretation and demonstrates some possible solutions to the problems outlined in a more general analysis of explained trends. The first and last lecture have broader explanatory ambitions: early cinema and establishing feature film format in the case of the former, and international film style trends in the late silent era in the case of the latter.
Výstupy z učení
The student will be able to:
- identify and summarize important features of European film style trends and particular movements in the history of silent cinema poetics: Swedish and Danish cinema, German Expressionism and Kammerspiel, French film impressionism and Soviet Montage cinema;
- to understand these trends in the broader contexts of film history;
- to know some of the most representative films of each of these trends (such as THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE, THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN, THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC);
- use some of the analytical and historical methods, in order to better understand the aesthetic history of silent cinema.
