Course objectives
The need of protection and regeneration of cultural values is naturally projected to row of human activities branches, to the creation of development strategies and development documents on all levels of elaboration and realisation.
This course enables to the student to obtain the basic information concerning the need, the sense, and the meaning of the landscape cultural values conserving. The particular topics concern the question of preserving of the architectural, as well as planning, heritage in the urban, village, or landscape space. They are also focused to the changes of the contemporary structures or principles, which it is necessary to determine and respect.
The course also provides the survey of the legislation and other documents that are important for the assuring of the cultural heritage protection and monument preservation in the Czech Republic, as well as in the international context. The topics concerning the sight restoration are especially meant to be a sketch of the specific characters of this process. They also have to show the distinctions resulting from the new using of the monument.
The last lessons are occupied by the demand for the preserving of the sight authenticity, including its landscape. The course is also supplied by the presentations (slide shows) of the cultural heritage and its regeneration.
At the end of the course students should be able to:
- understand and explain the necessity of protection and regeneration of cultural values;
- be well informed in the legislation, as well as in the expert securing of the process;
- interpret the role of the regional policy during the process of protection and regeneration of cultural values;
- work with information for the understanding of the collective character of this process;
- make deductions based on acquired knowledge in the field of the process of protection and regeneration of cultural values with a special wiev on the regional development questions
Syllabus
  • 1. Significance of preservation, prezentation and possibilities of evaluation, new forms of cultural heritage utilization – understanding of significance and need of realization to cultural values, basic information about memorial care and actual possibilities of cultural heritage utilization.
  • 2. Architectural and urbanistic heritage of the Czech Republic in European continuities – cross-section through important style stages of architectural and urbanistic creation with survey of the most important European constructions and their authors (prezentation of samples of the most important construcions).
  • 3. Character of type composition of architectural and urbanistic heritage – charakteristical types of constructions with prezentation of the most importatant samples of objects in the Czech Republic.
  • 4. International imstitutions, documents and forms of cultural heritage protection, world cultural heritage – cross-section through international documents connecting with protection of cultural estates; list of world cultural heritage and character of relevant objects in the Czech Republic, which became of its part prezentation with samples of localities).
  • 5. Actual care of cultural values and memories, legislative ensuring in the Czech Republic – survey of legislative concerning of memorial care, relating regulations, notices and agreements, organizations of state memorial care in the Czech Republic.
  • 6. Importance of memory in history, structure and panorama of town (example of development of town Brno) – developmental phases of object in relation to historical events, trenformation of expression of object and functional changes, contemporary utilization of castle and castle hill (prezentation of procedure of nowadays reconstruction of object).
  • 7. Formr of protection of historial settlements and their parts – significance and development of protection of historical towns, conception and process of areal protection, documents, international agreements, creation of regulatives and basic principles for regeneration (prezentation with samples).
  • 8. Conception of interventions in bild up area, changes in single function types – risks threatening preservation of cultural values, tools and regulatives, means of positive development of preservation of cultural values (prezentation with samples of appropriate and inappropriate interventions).
  • 9. Cultural values in landscape, picture of landscape and changes of landscape character – explanation of concepts, development stadia of landscape, contemporary landscape and elements of landscape character, limits of area exploration, interventions influencing landscape character, protection of landscape and landscape character (prezentation with samples of appropriate and inappropriate interventions).
  • 10. Problems of cultural values in rural space – cultural values in rural space, types composition, development possibilities and principles for preservation of cultural values on community level (prezentation with samples).
  • 11. Conception of recovery of memories and historical structures – procedures, methods, new functional utilization, project documentation of recovery and reconstruction.
  • 12. Constructions, materials and technology in proposal and realization of recovery – survey of constructional and material solving of objects in single style periods, actual opinions on application of materials for recovery and reconstruction of objects of historical cultural heritage.
  • 13. Cultural environment, génius loci, authenticity of environment – commented examples of preservation, revitalization and/or disturbing of autenthetic environment.

Teaching methods
The theoretical part uses the form of the study hour (the self-study) following the recommended texts as well as the assigned literature. In the course of the semester there are some intensive lessons. They supply the study with the interpretation of specified topics, and with the documentation of the examples of reconstruction of the cultural values. For the practical part of the lesson there is a seminary work. Student analyses, characterizes, and values the chosen sight or building. The presentation, and reconstruction of the cultural values are of special concern here. The student may choose also some examples of the historical cultural heritage.
Assessment methods
Written examination
The student is obliged to prepare the semester paper during the course. The students choose their topics from the offer in IS MU. They may consult the lecturer when preparing the paper. In the second half of the semester the students present their paper. The students’ participation in these presentations is compulsory. The papers are one part of the evaluation of the course. The students may also examine themselves using the tests.
