Předpoklady
Education is a tool for improving the quality of life. Education is not an end, but a process. My teaching philosophy is to encourage critical thinking, innovative problem-solving, practical application of theory, and tolerance of diverse ideas and cultures from a global perspective. To achieve these goals, I employ an interactive lecturing style, which empowers students by encouraging them to contribute to the ongoing discussion of familiar and unfamiliar topics, materials, and events. My lectures always include participation of students. Either students provide inputs on their own, or I ask them questions in the middle of my lecture. This is to ensure that students are fully engaged in our lectures and discussions. Thus, my students feel confident that their contributions mean a great deal to me and their own learning process. Finally, my teaching goals are to share my academic knowledge and policy experience with students and to inspire and help them to become life-long learners.

Metody hodnocení
Your final grade is based on a point system. I will not put letter grades on your assignments to avoid misleading interpretations of your final grade. Thus, students who are not doing well with a particular class requirement can still earn enough points to get a desirable final grade. ASSIGNMENT POINTS Attendance & Participation 10 points Class Presentation & Power Point 10 points Writing Assignments and Outline 15 points Paper Presentation 15 points Final Analytical Position Paper 50 points TOTAL 100 points Extra Credit (Paper Power Point) 5 Points Grading Scale Letter Grade Points A 90-100 B 89-80 C 79-70 D 69-60 E 59-55 F 54 & below Attendance & Participation Attendance is required without an exception. Obviously when one is absent, he/she cannot participate. Those, who are not in the class, will not fully comprehend the fine aspects of the readings, our discussion, and the lectures. Thus, attendance is extremely important in an online course. So, I allow only one full session absence (a seminar session) for the entire period of course. Attendance will be taken based on Masaryk University rules. By participation, I mean the contribution of each class participant to the ongoing class discussion. In this context, you may present your opinion, explanation, or relevant comments about the issue at hand. However, simply asking questions do not constitute participation. One way for our participants to gain recognition is to meaningfully contribute to the ongoing discussion. The attendance-participation score is worth 10 points. Class Presentation & Leading Discussion Each student is required to make a class presentation (along with a PowerPoint) based on our course required reading material starting with the second week session of our class. Considering the class size, students must equally divide the readings among themselves for their class presentation and associated power point. So, we will have different groups of students presenting each reading every week after the instructor’s lectures. The students are welcome to consult with each other about their own presentations. However, each student must make his/her own presentation. So, students cannot present on behalf of other students. Students should not worry about their language skills. Each presentation must be clear, organized, and well-summarized for about 10-minute each. The presentations are worth 10 points. Writing Assignment & Outline After the Second Lecture Session, all students will be assigned the role of a different Persian Gulf State Leader for our class Country Study Paper. This assignment is related to three required course assignments: 1) Writing Assignments and Outline, 2) Paper Presentation and Power Point, and 3) Final Analytical Position Paper. Each class participant is required to research his/her assigned country and topic and put himself/herself in the place of the country’s leader for the remaining sessions. In this regard, the discussion leader should prepare a detailed outline of his/her country policy goals and means for seminar participants. The presenter must summarize the main points of the relevant literature, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of such works, relate to International Relations (IR) theory to the practice of diplomacy, and stimulate discussion with his/her presentation and questions. The participants may earn up to 15 points for their outline and first draft of writing. Paper Presentation Associated with their own analytical papers, each student is also required to make a class presentation (with PowerPoint) starting with the last 2 weeks of our class sessions. Considering the number of students, the presentation must be clear, super organized, and well-summarized for a maximum of 10 minutes. The details of your research must appear in papers themselves not in the presentation due to our limited time. The paper presentations are worth 15 points. Final Analytical Position Paper All seminar participants are required to write a minimum 5-page (single-spaced, Times New Roman style, font 10 size) updated paper based on their own Country Assignment. This well-research and documented paper will blend IR theory and methods with practice of IR in form of policy and diplomacy. It must be the most updated sources about the topic at hand. It should include not only traditional book, manuscript, and academic articles, but also internet sources and significant web sites. The papers must be well-documented by a minimum of 50 endnotes (Chicago style) and include a comprehensive bibliography. The above page limits do not include the endnotes, annotated bibliography, and appendices. This paper is worth 50 points and is due without exception on December 23rd. That is 1 week after our course ended. The grades will be reported in January after the holidays. Extra Credit Assignment At a student’s request along with earlier approval of the instructor, any student could earn a maximum of extra 5 points for an additional project assigned to him or her. This score counts toward their final class grade.
