Anotace
This course introduces students to theories and empirical research on media effects, with a particular emphasis on mediated political communication. It examines how media exposure shapes political attitudes, perceptions, and behavior, as well as broader political processes. The course is organized into three thematic modules. The first module introduces media effects research as a distinct tradition within communication studies. It provides a historical overview of the field and familiarizes students with core concepts, theoretical models, and methodological approaches used to study media influence. The second module focuses on the effects of political communication at the individual level. It examines processes of opinion formation and change, cognitive effects (such as agenda-setting, priming, and framing), and behavioral outcomes, including political participation and socialization. Particular attention is given to the mechanisms underlying these effects and to theoretical models that emphasize their conditional nature. The final module addresses system-level consequences of political communication. It explores topics such as political polarization and the mediatization of politics, highlighting how media dynamics may shape political institutions, public discourse, and democratic processes.
