Cíle předmětu
This seminar is associated with SOC 756, Research Methodology. It will provide students with an opportunity to delve more deeply ad profoundly into the weekly readings. The overarching goal is to offer students a comprehensive understanding of the diverse research methodologies in the social sciences and their ontological and epistemological bases. Students will also learn the basic methods of both qualitative and quantitative research and gain an overview of the necessary practical skills required for their application. Individual weekly topics include the choosing a methodology, formulating research problems/questions, techniques for gathering data, presenting and interpreting results and research ethics.

By the end of the semester, students should be able to:

• Recognize, define and discuss various methods for research in the social sciences
• Review and assess existing research according to its methodology and use of data and methods
• Compare and contrast quantitative and qualitative research methods
• Formulate research problems and apply techniques for collecting data and presenting and interpreting findings that address the relevant research questions
• Critically reflect about the ontological and epistemological consequences of their own methodological decisions
• Cultivate research proficiency and expertise by undertaking a semester-long assignment that involves designing a research project and writing up a proposal elaborating it

Výukové metody
The course will consist of a weekly seminar, where both the teacher and the students actively participate. Students are expected to complete the weekly readings prior to class and be prepared to present their written responses to the readings and discuss them in detail. Each student will also lead a class discussion at least one over the course of the semester.
