- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to acquire knowledge of addiction issues in children and adolescents within the context of the school environment. The course introduces students to the basic types of addictions and the specific characteristics of their development. It focuses on prevention strategies at the school level and possible interventions in cases of suspected substance use.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to: -describe the basic types of addictions and their specific characteristics in children and adolescents -characterize forms of addiction prevention in the school environment and propose appropriate preventive measures -identify warning signs in students at risk of addiction and apply suitable intervention procedures -navigate the system of addiction treatment and support services
- Syllabus
- 1. Addictions – substance and behavioral addictions, addiction as a disease, development of addiction, risk factors for addiction development, current trends, addictions in children
- 2. Addiction prevention in school – primary (specific, non-specific), secondary and tertiary prevention (harm reduction), specific preventive activities
- 3. Intervention in case of suspected addiction in a student – warning signs of addiction in a student, counseling interview, screening, motivational interviews, limits of the special needs educator
- 4. Student under the influence of an addictive substance at school – first aid, duty to report, addictive substance at school
- 5. Follow-up care for students at risk of addiction – addictology services (outpatient and inpatient services), mental health support services, cooperation with child protection authority
