Course objectives
One semester course. The course is an introduction to the study of Chinese language, culture, geography, etnography, society, and politics. The students gain knowledge of key facts of Chinese culture.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to:
- understand and interpret basic realia necessary for culture oriented study of China
- actively apply Czech and English transcriptions;
- interpret the knowledge of basic realia of Chinese culture
Syllabus
  • 1) China and Chinese language – basic introduction to the topic
  • 2) Identity of China and Chinese culture – historical and cultural overview
  • 3) China and the West, images of China in the West
  • 4) Communist Party of China, Chinese Marxism
  • 5) A hundred years of national humiliation (as a narrative of modern Chinese identity)
  • 6) Basic social and economic problems in China

Teaching methods
Teaching takes the form of lectures and seminar work on selected topics. Before each class, students read a required text and/or watch a film, which will be discussed in class.
Assessment methods
1) Overall success rate in 5 continuous tests of at least 50%. The content of the continuous tests mainly covers the material from the previous lesson and several questions on the content of the text/film prescribed for that lesson.
2) Final written test. Pass mark 70%.
