- Course objectives
- The aim of this course is to explain what fascism is, how and why historians, political scientists, sociologists and other humanities scholars have defined it in different ways, and to show how it worked in practice through specific historical events. The class will concentrate on the nature of fascism as expressed in its Italian and German forms, but also in many other movements in Europe, with special attention to specific manifestations of fascism in Asia: in China and Japan.
- Learning outcomes
- - after completing the course the student will be able to identify fascism and fascist movements and to recognize which of them can really be said to be fascist and which not - understand the philosophical and ideological roots of fascist ideology and the way in which specific national permutations of fascism have emerged from them - understand the historical and political evolution of fascist regimes in Germany and Italy and selected fascist movements in Europe and Asia - analyse contemporary (neo)fascist movements and compare them with those of the interwar period - understand and describe the factors influencing the growth of fascism and identify the dangers

- Lectures - online/presentation. part of the course will be self-study in an interactive curriculum, part of the course will be face-to-face (dates to be specified)
- Assessment methods
- The completion of the course has two parts 1. The group project is a prerequisite for admission to the test 2. Test Project Goal: Your task is to create a scenario of a model fascist regime in a real, alternative, or fictional country and then critically analyze this regime. You should show that you understand the historical development of fascism, its ideology and instruments of power - and that you can apply them to new conditions. Final test (by attendance) - Form: multiple choice (closed questions) - Topics: main concepts from lectures, readings and other materials provided during the semester - Only students who have completed the project portion may take the test.
