- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to:
paraphrase the basic rules of Latin normative syntactic phenomena studied within the course (vide the syllabus of the course);
translate clauses into Czech and Latin;
analyze complex Latin sentences;
explain the use of concrete grammatical features in Latin sentences;
use synonymic constructions and explain differences in their meaning;
sketch the system of Latin subordinate clauses and non-finite verb constructions. - Syllabus
- Adverbial clauses - final, consecutive, causal, conditional and concessive clauses: conjunctions in different types of clauses and use of indicative or subjunctive, other means of expression (predicative participle, ablative absolute, relative subjunctive clauses).
- Comparative clauses (types, use of tenses and moods).
- Oratio obliqua with special attention paid to conditional clauses (general rules or tendencies, conditional clauses in reported speech).
- Introduction to semantic and syntactic functions of Latin cases (basic functions of Latin cases, comparison to Czech case system).

- Teaching methods
- The course has a form of regular lectures and practice (translation into Czech and Latin, analysis and explanation of the grammatical rules). Regular work outside classroom is required. Attendance at least 75%.
- Assessment methods
- Several written tests consisting of translation from Latin and into Latin take place during the semester. Attendance to the tests is obligatory. To proceed to the final exam, students must pass all the partial tests.
If students fail the tests, they have to pass a final comprehensive test (they have two attempts).
Exam is a written test that includes all the grammar studied so far. Students must be able to translate sentences into Latin and from Latin into Czech, analyze sentences, distinguish between different types of sentences, translate short Latin text into Czech. Students must also prove knowledge of Latin morphology.
Student's work during the semester and results of tests written during the semester are part of the final evaluation. - Language of instruction
