Cíle předmětu
A. Aims
1. To introduce students to key concepts in first and second language acquisition.
2. To acquaint students with major processes and factors influencing SLA.
3. To develop participants' knowledge of approaches and major theories of SLA and their application in foreign language teaching.
B. Method
The course is designed for students of English and applied linguistics. The classes will take the form of a combination of lectures and workshops, followed by guided discussion. The students are expected to have completed a course in methodology of foreign language teaching, although a detailed knowledge of theories of language learning is not a prerequisite of joining the course.

  • 1. The role of the first language: behaviourist learning theory, language transfer, Contrastive Analysis.
  • 2. Learner errors and Error Analysis.
  • 3. Patterns of development: mentalist accounts of SLA, interlanguage, order and sequence of development.
  • 4. Variability in learner language.
  • 5. External factors in SLA: input and interaction (teacher talk and foreigner talk).
  • 6. Learner strategies: learning strategies (hypothesis formation and hypothesis testing), communication strategies.
  • 7. Individual learner differences: age, aptitude, motivation, personality, cognitive style.
  • 8. The role of formal instruction in SLA.
  • 9. A review of theories of SLA: The Acculturation Model, The Monitor Model, The Universal Hypothesis, The Competition Model, The Processability Theory.
  • 10. Theory, practice and application in SLA research. Theories of language learning and language pedagogy.
