Cíle předmětu
This course introduces undergraduate and graduate students to the archaeological theories, principles and controversies of the English-speaking world. Students will learn about and discuss anthropological archaeology, culture, objectivity, the “New Archaeology”, interpretive archaeology, positivism and post-modernism, and about the role of the Philosophy of Science in addressing critical archaeological questions. Students will read from the writings of seminal thinkers, including Binford, Childe, Hodder, Renfrew, Tilley, Trigger and Wylie. Students will be evaluated by attendance, and through a short essay on a topic of their choice written in Czech or English. Students must have at least an intermediate level of fluency in English (if you understand this course description you will be fine).

Reading requirements will be discussed during the course, and provided as required. Students do not need to purchase any books or other materials. Prior to the course it is recommended that students read one recent article in anthropological or archaeological theory, written by an English-speaking academic, in English or in translation. Students may contact the lecturer directly for reading suggestions.
