Cíle předmětu
Since the 1930s, American broadcast media has shaped, been impacted by and reflected the cultural dialogue of the nation. Nowhere has this been truer than in the arena of political commentary. A closer look at the interaction between public thought and ideological messaging reveals both the character of America and how its current philosophical divide evolved over time. This course will examine how such messaging has been delivered and manipulated since the dawn of radio. The class format will be comprised of lecture and discussion, as well as review of archival audio and video records which will help trace the history of this phenomenon. The class will also involve required readings and viewings of documentary footage from Fr Coughlin’s Depression-era broadcasts, through the iconic “Crossfire” program, and contemporary offerings such as “Morning Joe” and “Real Time with Bill Maher.”
