Course objectives
Latin Grammar IV continues study of Latin subordinate clauses and focuses on basic types of subordinate clauses, so that students can understand texts written by classical authors and grammatical description of more complex syntactic phenomena. Latin Grammar IV is the last grammar course common for all study plans. Students of major and completus continue with the course Latin Grammar V.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to:
- paraphrase the basic rules of Latin normative syntactic phenomena studied within the course (vide the syllabus of the course);
- translate clauses into Czech and Latin;
- analyze complex Latin sentences;
- explain the use of grammatical phenomena in Latin sentences;
- use synonymic constructions and explain differences in their meaning;
- describe similarities and differences between selected syntactic structures as for their function;
- understand texts of classical authors by means of dictionary and grammar book (in case of more complex structures not studied so far).
Syllabus
  • Systematic explanation of Latin subordinate clauses and their functional equivalents.
  • 1. Introduction to Latin syntax. Sequence of tenses and moods. Introduction to the basic rules that will be specified and studied in more detail in examination of concrete types of subordinate clauses.
  • 2. - 5. Declarative and imperative complement clauses: use of accusative / nominative with infinitive construction in competition with subordinate clauses with finite verbs, use of indicative and subjunctive in subordinate clauses and the difference conveyed by the verbal mood.
  • 6. Interrogative complement clauses.
  • 7. Relative clauses, use of indicative or subjunctive.
  • 8. - 9. Temporal clauses.
  • 10. Final clauses. Consecutive clauses.
  • 11. Causal clauses.
  • 12. Conditional clauses.
  • 13. Concessive clauses.

Teaching methods
The course includes lectures and practice with focus on translating into Czech and Latin, analysis of the Latin clauses, and exercises designed to check comprehension of syntactic phenomena under examination. Students are also encouraged to discuss function of the use of forms and constructions and practise correct argumentation. Regular work at home is expected.
Assessment methods
Assessment of the course consists of grammar test written during semester and final exam. Class attendance is obligatory, students can be absent five times without providing an excuse. Besides that, active attendance at lessons and homework are required.

Grammar tests Several written grammar tests take place during the semester. Attendance to the tests is obligatory. For successful completion of the course students have to:
- reach average success rate of 75% in all the grammar tests;
- reach success rate of 75% in the last test.
If students fail the tests, they have to pass an extra comprehensive test as an additional part of the final exam.

Exam Exam is a written test and an oral examination, which examines the theoretical as well as practical understanding of the Latin grammar covered. In the written test, students have to prove their knowledge of syntactic structures studied so far (correct use of morphological forms is naturally supposed). The test consists of translation of forms and sentences from and into Latin, and exercises focused on ability to analyze Latin complex sentences.
In the oral part, students have to show their skills by translating selected passages from an author listed as compulsory for the study plan taken by an individual student, and by analyzing selected grammatical phenomena found in the text (students will have time to prepare the translation). Besides that, students have to explain any syntactic phenomenon studied so far by means of using appropriate linguistic terminology.
