Cíle předmětu
This course is intended as a survey of literary works from the long eighteenth century. During this period of intense cosmopolitanism ,Europeans began an examination of their own customs, beliefs and values, which was in part stimulated by a new awareness of non-European cultures. We will follow these themes--self-examination and perceptions of other cultures--as they appear in the European literature, especially the British literature,, of the age. A further aim is to understand how these tendencies gave rise to many of the ideas about human nature and social development that are still with us in the twenty-first century. Readings will be selected from a variety of genres: novel,drama, essays, letters and histories and include such writers as Swift, Defoe, Gay, Addison and Steele, Pope, Johnson, Goldsmith Sterne and Beckford.
