Course summary The primary aim of this course is to make students understand the principles of language change. It is to be achieved by introducing students to the study of regional and social variation in language. While the former has been commented upon since the time of Chaucer and formally studied for the past 150 years, the latter has come under academic scrutiny since the pioneering work done by William Labov in New York in the 1960’s. Making use of authentic materials—ranging from Survey of English Dialects to the BBC Voices project—the course invites students to critically analyse the evolving techniques used to explore speech variation in both its historic and modern contexts. For the reasons outlined above the course can be viewed as an auxiliary seminar of the history of the English language. Furthermore, it addresses the issues of language standardisation and prescription, including the hotly-debated concept of Received Pronunciation (RP). As far as this is concerned, students will be introduced to the latest developments, particularly to the RP model devised by prof. Upton at Leeds University and now widely used by Oxford University Press.
