Course objectives
Nowadays, learning one or more languages plays an essential role in Europe: "The EU’s language policy promotes multilingualism and aims for a situation in which every EU citizen can speak at least two foreign languages in addition to their mother tongue." (EU language policy, http://ec.europa.eu/education/languages/eu-language-policy/index_en.htm?cs_mid=183 (EU Sprachenpolitik, http://ec.europa.eu/education/languages/eu-language-policy/index_de.htm) Learning a foreign language always implies contact with a different, a foreign culture.
In this course the students will work on the basic concepts of intercultural communication regarding theoretical as well as practical aspects. At the end of the course, students should be able to talk about the concepts "culture" and "communication" with a view from different sides. Furthermore, the students are expected to reflect on the self and the other and be able to talk about it. Finally, the students should be able to transform the theoretical knowledge into practical usage, such as trainings, workshops, etc.
Syllabus
  • In this course, the students will work on the basic concepts of intercultural communication regarding theoretical as well as practical aspects.
  • During the first theoretical part, the concepts "culture" and "communication" are to be defined and the connection between these two aspects is determined. Subsequently, the influence of the element "language" to culture and communication is looked at and discussed.
  • During the second practical part, the students think about what to do practically with the theoretical information from the first part. Ideally, the students will work on training concepts which could be used in reality, such as intercultural trainings or workshops, not only in language classes but also in other contexts in which several cultures are involved.
