Cíle předmětu
In this course, we will explore linguistic and discourse-level variation that occurs in different genres of online communication. Our exploration will cover a broad range of CMC genres, including social networking sites, blogs and micro-blogs, online reviews, to name a few. We will also consider the social practices that occur in these genres, and we will consider the ways in which language is variously shaped, re-worked, and constrained by them. Online stance and identities, narratives, multilingualism, multimodality, politeness/impoliteness, linguistic creativity, metalinguistic practices, and intertextuality are some of the themes that we will touch on in the course. Our readings will include empirical research, and class discussion will focus on methodological and ethical issues as well as developing critical digital literacy.
Osnova
  • The class is run as an intensive course, to be held from 2 October to 6 October. Each day, there will be two morning blocks 9.10-10.40, 10.50-12.20. The course is taught by a visiting scholar, professor Camilla Vasques (University of Florida, Tampa). Final assessment is carried out by Jan Chovanec (exam in the form of a written paper - due in January). Please note that you are expected to have 80 per cent attendance in this course, so please make arrangements in your other classes to be able to attend this intensive course. Thank you.
