Cíle předmětu
The aim of the course is to consider aspects of the work of two Romantic poets of two different generations, social classes and social backgrounds, namely, William Blake and Lord Byron, considering, comparing and contrasting their poetic, cultural, political and metaphysical stances. Among those poems partially considered will be 'The Four Zoas' and 'Jersualem' by Blake, and Childe Harold' and 'Don Juan' by Byron in addition to shorter works by both poets.
Výstupy z učení
Students completing the course will be expected to have developed a somewhat broader understanding of the work of Blake and Byron as represented by those elements covered and for each an introduction to aspects of the interpretation of his work by at least one of the major post-war critical approaches.

Výukové metody
The course will be taught taught by a combination of close-reading, small group-work and class discussion.
Metody hodnocení
The course will be assessed by a combination of class contribution (40%)and attendance plus an essay of eight to ten pages which should be submitted to the teacher of the course in hard copy form(60%). Essays on Blake's Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience not admissible.
