Cíle předmětu
Students will acquire basic knowledge about Translation Studies as a discipline and its objectives and methods and its ongoing dialogue with Linguistics. They will get to know a selection of TS sources, namely several framing texts and a the most important journals in the field. They will gain an active knowledge of concepts concerning the study of translated language and learn the basics of their operationalization. They will increase their competence in using (TS) literature and evaluating research papers independently, finding links between concepts and research results and adopting them to their use.
Výstupy z učení
Having completed the course, students will: - have basic knowledge about Translation Studies as a discipline and its objectives and methods
- understand shared ground between linguistics and TS and its role in TS
- be able to search and select TS sources relevant to their linguistic interests
- be familar with basic concepts concerning the study of translated language
- have done a small-scale research project based on linguistic approaches to studying translation
Osnova
  • (1) Translation Studies as a discipline. Types of research and corresponding methods.
  • (2) An introduction to the discourse on language-specific tendencies (translation universals). Unique items, explicitation and implicitation in translation, translation universals and translation and/vs. interpreting.
  • (3) Unique items, explicitation and implicitation in translation, translation universals and translation and/vs. interpreting.
  • (4) Another research topic based on linguistic approaches to translation (flexible, depending on students' research interests). Research assessment and criticism. An outline of literature to base the small-scale study of one's own on.
  • (5) Student presentations of their projects, discussion.
