- Course objectives
- This course is primarily for students of geographical disciplines. The objective of this course is to familiarize students with topics that are related to their field of study. Students will work with scientific topics to improve their grammar, enhance their vocabulary and writing skills to be able to communicate in academia. The course is focused on communication skills (discussion, paraphrasing, presentations), on writing skills (academic email, summary), listening skills (videos and podcasts on scientific topics) and reading skills (articles related to science).
- Learning outcomes
- After completing this course learners will be able to:
understand authentic texts/lectures on Earth science corresponding to their level of English
identify the main ideas
formulate the main ideas
summarize a scientific/geographical text
interpret the information from the text/lecture
explain causes and effects
describe a process
define the terms of the course topics
compare and contrast phenomena using adequate terminology and academic vocabulary
present the topics of interest using basic presentation techniques
discuss one´s study plans

- Teaching methods
- Course of English for Special Purposes: specialized text analysis (main idea, questions, comprehension, summary), listening comprehension, podcasts, videos, conversation and discussion in pairs and in groups, presentations in plenary; applying grammar and vocabulary in new contexts.
- Assessment methods
- Active work in the course, doing homework and 80% seminar attendance are compulsory.The course concludes with a final team presentation supported by an academic poster. Students have to complete assignments throughout the semester.
