Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:
identify medically important microscopic fungi (moulds) occurring in our environment - microfungi on food and feed, on walls of flats, or in the air;
distinguish anamorphs connected with ascomycetous orders (genera Trichophyton, Microsporum, Epidermophyton, Penicillium, Aspergillus, Fusarium etc.); use methods of isolation and cultivation;
evaluate micromorphological and macromorphological features of these organisms;
explain effects of mycotoxins on human health.
Syllabus
  • Current systematic arrangement of microscopic medically important fungi; methods of isolation, cultivation and determination of micromycetes, ascomycetous yeasts (candida), Aspergillus, Mucor, Fusarium; fungal infection – definitions and therapy; antifungal drugs; mycotoxins of microscopic fungi and their significance.
