Abstract
The course provides a comprehensive overview of clinically important microscopic fungi as well as species occurring in the environment (e.g. food and indoor fungi). It addresses the etiology and pathogenesis of mycotic diseases, including an overview of major mycotoxin-producing fungi and the diseases associated with their toxins. The course also covers the key diagnostic methods used in clinical mycology.

Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
  • characterize the most important causative agents of mycotic diseases;
  • apply specific methods for the isolation and cultivation of clinically significant microscopic fungi;
  • evaluate morphological characteristics of selected taxonomic groups relevant for their systematic classification;
  • explain the mechanisms of action of antifungal agents and the principles of antifungal resistance;
  • explain the effects of mycotoxins on human health.

    • Major groups of causative agents of mycotic diseases (dermatophytes, clinically significant yeasts, dimorphic micromycetes, the genus Aspergillus, members of the order Mucorales, and agents of hyalohyphomycoses and phaeohyphomycoses);
    • systematic classification of clinically significant micromycetes within the fungal kingdom;
    • diagnostic methods used in medical mycology; 
    • mycotic diseases and their etiology;
    • overview of antifungal agents and their mechanisms of action;
    • mycotoxins of microscopic fungi and their significance.

Written examination. The final test consists of 30 questions with a maximum score of 42 points. A minimum of 22 points is required to pass the examination.
