- Course objectives
- Objectives of this hands-on course of Histology and Embryology aim on demonstration of inner structure of cells and tissues using of electronograms and differentially stained histological slides, including discussion and demonstration of their embryonic development using schemes and electronic materials.
- Learning outcomes
- Course objectives
At the end of the course students are able to:
1. Describe tissue processing for light and electron microscopy and use the basic light microscope properly.
2. Understand and explain the structure of a cell, basic structural principles and function of connective tissues, features of epithelial tissue, structure of different types of muscle tissue, structure and function of nervous tissue, composition of blood, basic principles of hematopoiesis.
3. Identify tissue types in histologic slides.
4. Describe gamete development, explain principle of meiosis and regulation of gametogenesis, describe ovarian and menstrual cycles, their relationship and endocrine regulation.
5. Define the early embryonic development as well as development of fetal membranes, placenta and umbilical cord in detail. Characterize stages of embryonic development.
6. Characterize the course of pregnancy and delivery and potential anomalies, describe changes in number of fetuses and respective alterations in placenta and fetal membranes. - Syllabus
- Introduction, organization of practicals, teaching aids. Overview of histological methods. Tissue processing for light microscopy - explanation and film. Basic histochemistry and immunocytochemistry.
- Cytology: Ultrastructure of the cell nucleus (during interphase and mitosis). Ultrastructure of cell organelles (mitochondria, the Golgi apparatus, the endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, lysosomes, peroxisomes, and the centriol). Cell inclusions. The arrangement of cell surfaces: apical, lateral, and basal ones. Intercellular junctions: adhering, occluding, and communicating ones.
- Blood elements: Preparation of blood smears and their staining. Cytology of formed elements of blood. Differential white cell count (dWCC) - average values, abnormities and terminology of dWCC. Slide: A smear of peripheral blood stained by Pappenheim's method.
- Hematopoiesis: Erythropoiesis, granulopoiesis and development of thrombocytes. Development of lymphocytes and monocytes. Microscopic structure of the bone marrow. Slide: A smear of bone marrow stained by Pappenheim's method.
