- Course objectives
- This course is designed to provide student with a foundation of informations about tissue processing for light and electron microscopy, student will learn to use light microscope, orient in histologic slides and identify observed objects. Student also should be able to interpret electron micrographs. 2 practical lessons are devoted to general embryology.
- Syllabus
- Introduction, organization of practicals, teaching aids. Overview of histological methods. Tissue processing for light microscopy - explanation and film. Basic histochemistry and immunocytochemistry.
- Cytology: Ultrastructure of the cell nucleus (during interphase and mitosis). Ultrastructure of cell organelles (mitochondria, the Golgi apparatus, the endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, lysosomes, peroxisomes, and the centriol). Cell inclusions. The arrangement of cell surfaces: apical, lateral, and basal ones. Intercellular junctions: adhering, occluding, and communicating ones.
- Blood elements: Preparation of blood smears and their staining. Cytology of formed elements of blood. Differential white cell count (dWCC) - average values, abnormities and terminology of dWCC. Slide: A smear of peripheral blood stained by Pappenheim's method.
- Hematopoiesis: Erythropoiesis, granulopoiesis and development of thrombocytes. Development of lymphocytes and monocytes. Microscopic structure of the bone marrow. Slide: A smear of bone marrow stained by Pappenheim's method.
- Embryology I. Interactive repetition of early human development. Outline of the development of fetal membranes: amnion and chorion. Placenta, types of placenta, development of placenta in humans. Structure and function of human placenta. Development of umbilical cord. Anomalies of placenta and umbilical cord. Uterus and pregnancy. Development of external form of the embryo.
- Embryology II. Interactive repetition of Embryology I. Parturition. FMarks of full-term and mature fetus. The rule of Haase. Position, posture, habitus and presentation of the fetus. Multiple pregnancy: mono- and dizygotic twins, arrangements of fetal membranes. Prenatal diagnostic and medicine. Essentials of teratology. Critical periods.
- General histology: Use of the light microscope, common faults in microscopy. Results of basic staining methods in histology: Hematoxylin-eosine /HE/ (hepar), hematoxylin-eosine-safron /HES/ (oesophagus), AZAN (prostate), impregnation (cerebellum).
- Connective tissue proper - classification and examples. Slides: Funiculus umbilicalis, Oesophagus, Posterior segment of the eye, Lien, Aorta.
