- Course objectives
- The cours contains the elemets of phenomenology and response functions, including the consequences of causality (Kramers-Kronig relaions). Microscopic models cover the classical description of the response of bound and free charges, and the perturbation treatment of quantum transitions. The models are subsequently used in explaining the typical spectra of free carriers, single- and multiphonon absorption, and the fundamental response of interband electronic transitions. The course is concluded with an overview of the properties of metals, semiconductors and insulators over the optical frequency range, and with the most common experimental techniques.

- 1. Phenomenology, response functions. Complex conductivity, permittivity, refractive index. 2. Kramers-Kronig relaions. 3. Classical models, bound and free charges. 4. Quantum transitions. 5. Single- and multiple-phonon absorption. 6. Free carrier plasma. 7. Interband transitions and critical points. 8. Overview of the properties of metals, semiconductors and insulators over the optical frequency range. 9. Experimental techniques.

- Assessment methods
- Attending the lectures is not compulsory, however, it greatly facilitates passing the course. Several themes are selected during the semester for discussion, requiring prior homework. Passing the colloquium is based on a fair orientation of the student in selected areas of the field.
