Course objectives
Latin Grammar I is an intensive course of Latin language, which enables students to quickly acquire knowledge of the easiest Latin grammar. The course is meant particularly for students of the programme Latin Language and Literature in the first year, and together with the subsequent course Latin Grammar II it helps to reach a comparable level of knowledge among all the students in the group.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to:
- reproduce grammatical rules and paradigms studied within the course (see syllabus of the course);
- use basic Latin grammatical terminology associated with the grammar studied within the course;
- apply grammatical rules to translating of concrete sentences and easy texts from Latin and translating simple sentences into Latin;
- analyze sentences and utilize the analysis in translating;
- compare similarities and differences between various morphological forms;
- convert clauses from active to passive voice and vice versa and do similar operations (use synonymic grammatical devices etc.);
- by using dictionary understand easy Latin texts.
Syllabus
  • 1st week: Introduction to Latin language, alphabet, pronunciation, and accent. Latin grammatical categories in comparison with the Czech ones. Introduction to declension and conjugation, essential morphological terms.
  • 1st week: 1st declension nouns, basic prepositions.
  • 2nd week: 1st conjugation (present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive); translation of passive forms, expression of the agent.
  • 3rd week: 2nd declension nouns, 1st, and 2nd declension adjectives.
  • 4th week: Verb esse, compounds of the verb esse. Adverbs derived from the 1st and 2nd declension adjectives.
  • 5th week: 2nd conjugation (present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive).
  • 6th and 7th week: 3rd declension nouns.
  • 8th and 9th week: 3rd and 4th conjugation, mixed conjugation (type capio) - present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive. Deponent verbs.
  • 10th and 11th week: 3rd declension adjectives, present participle, and its use.
  • 12th week: Adverbs of 3rd declension adjectives, personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, demonstrative pronouns is, idem, possessive genitive and dative.
  • 13th and 14th week: Double accusative construction, accusative with infinitive construction.

Teaching methods
Lectures, practice, homework, reading easy Latin texts, translation.
Assessment methods
The credit is awarded for active participation in the classes, homework, and passing the control written tests. Five such tests are written during the course. Attendance to tests is obligatory. Class attendance is obligatory, students can be absent three times without providing an excuse (except for tests).
Requierements for obtaining the credit (students have to fulfill all of them):
- Reach average success rate of at least 75% in all the tests;
- Reach success rate of at least 75% in the last test;
If students fail the tests, they have to pass a final comprehensive test (success rate of 75%).
