Parts of the final state examination and its content
The final master’s state examination consists of an examination in Modern Greek language and literature and a defence of a master’s thesis . At the master’s thesis defence, students present their thesis and its aims and outputs, respond to comments from their supervisor and the opponent, and answer questions and remarks from the committee.
The final master’s state examination consists of a written and an oral part; both must be taken during the same exam period. Students sit the written part first; students who do not successfully pass the written test cannot sit the oral part of the examination. The exam content is based on both the fundamental theoretical profile core courses (Z) and the profile core courses (P).
In the written exam, students demonstrate their command of Modern Greek at the C1 level (primarily from the courses Practical Language – Advanced and Writing in Modern Greek, but language skills are improved in all of the courses taught in Greek). The exam consists of a part focused on understanding a written text and an essay on a given topic.
The oral part examines the students’ knowledge in the following fields:
– Spoken Greek (from Practical Language and other courses),
– Byzantine and early Modern Greek literature and theoretical approaches to literature (from Introduction to Byzantine Literature, Greek Literature of the 15th –18th Centuries, and text interpretation seminars),
– Byzantine and Modern Greek literature, both in the original and in translation (the reading list is required),
– The development of Greek from Hellenistic Koine up to the present and the ability to read and understand the texts included (from History of the Modern Greek Language I and II, Classical Greek for M. A.), and
– General knowledge of history of Greece of the 15th–18th centuries (from History of Greece of the 15th – 18th centuries).
