About the programme

By studying the Bachelor’s degree programme Informatics, you will acquire a solid foundation in this scientific discipline. You will study programming languages, principles of algorithm design and implementation, and gain knowledge and skills in areas such as artificial intelligence, computer networks, information security, and more. You will also become familiar with the essential theory of computational complexity and encounter problems that no computer in the world can ever solve. You will learn many new methods and approaches related to the design and analysis of complex systems. At our faculty, you will become a highly qualified professional with strong analytical thinking skills and the ability to approach a wide range of computing-related challenges from a comprehensive perspective, including problems that extend into everyday life.

How the studies are structured

A significant part of the curriculum can be tailored to your interests by choosing one of the offered specializations. The current options are:

  • Open Informatics – for students who wish to choose independently from a wide range of courses.
  • Computer Systems, Communication and Security
  • Robotics
  • Visual Informatics – for those interested in computer graphics or image analysis.
  • Graphic Design – shares the foundations of the previous specialization but also focuses on 3D modelling, design, and typography.
  • Natural Language Processing
  • Fundamentals of Mathematics – for students who wish to deepen their mathematical knowledge and better prepare for research in various areas of computer science.

You can further enrich your studies by participating in research activities within one of our many laboratories and research groups or by collaborating with a commercial company that serves as an industrial partner of the Faculty.

  • Objectives

    This study programme is recommended to students who intend to get fundamental knowledge in informatics and get acquainted with the general principals of making and using information technology. Besides, the basic orientation in the field students will get enough knowledge and practical training to be able to find employment in the field immediately after graduation. The programme offers some options to aim the profile of the education towards selected basic areas of computer science, such as computer graphics, data processing, information security, networking, artificial intelligence, and computer science.

  • Learning Outcomes

    Upon successful completion of the programme, the graduate is able to:

    • explain fundaments of computer systems, including operating systems, data storage and computer networks;
    • design algorithms for solving concrete problems and formulate them in selected programming language;
    • apply various techniques and methods to analyze, process and store data for the given purpose;
    • explain fundamental terms, concepts and results of informatics as the science discipline.
  • Occupational Profiles of Graduates

    As a graduate of the Bachelor's degree programme, you will acquire essential knowledge of programming languages. You will be able to design and implement algorithms and work with new models and approachesGraduates of the Bachelor's programme typically continue their studies at the follow-up Master's level. However, entering the job market immediately after graduation is also a common and viable option. You may pursue a wide range of positions focused on software development or information technology.

  • Practical Training

    There is no mandatory company internship in the Informatics study programme.

  • Goals of Theses

    The goal of Bachelor's thesis is to demonstrate that a student is capable of working on a project of non-trivial size (e.g. to create a useful application, or to formulate and prove advanced mathematical thesis), as well as to demonstrate the capability of presentation and positioning of the results in the context of actual state-of-the-art in the field. Bachelor's thesis is expected to be written in Czech, Slovak or English language. Expected structure of the work includes declaration of the author about the thesis being a school work, declaration of authorship, contents, the proper text, and references. Minimal expected scope of the work is 30 regular pages of the proper text (including illustrations).

  • Access to Further Studies

    After completing this study programme, you will be eligible to continue your studies in any follow-up Master's degree programme focused on computer science. At our faculty, the Bachelor's degree programme in Computer Science is directly followed by the Master's degree programmes Theoretical Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Data Processing, Visual Informatics, and Computer Systems, Communication and Security.
