Physiotherapy is a combined and coordinated use of medical, social and work means to train or recover the highest possible degree of functional ability.

Degree programme objectives

The aim of the study program is to acquire the theoretical knowledge and practical skills for the performance of the relevant medical profession and to educate for the medical practice a qualified expert - a bachelor who will be entitled to perform the activities of the physiotherapist in the field of therapeutic and preventive care in the frame of therapeutic rehabilitation and other components of comprehensive rehabilitation at the corresponding workplaces both in the state and the private sector, within the scope of the competences defined in the graduate profile.

A graduate of a Bachelor's degree program is qualified to work independently in the field of medical rehabilitation. For this competence, sufficient professional qualifications within the theoretical and practical components of education were created during the study. He will be able to follow the development trends in the field and to develop lifelong learning.

The Physiotherapist (bachelor) provides diagnostic, preventive and medical care in the pathophysiology of clinical disorders and disorders of the locomotor system in the field of therapeutic preventive care in healthcare facilities, spa facilities, social care institutions, rehabilitation institutes including specialized workplaces. According to the diagnosis and recommendations of the physician, based on their own examinations and patient needs, they determine optimal variants and combinations of procedures to achieve the desired goal stated in the surgery.

  • Learning Outcomes

    Upon successful completion of the programme, the graduate is able to:

    • know the basic theoretical and methodological knowledge from the field of rehabilitation and other medical sciences that rehabilitation relies on;
    • explain the connections and relationships between rehabilitation and other knowledge of medical science;
    • apply appropriately different approaches to rehabilitation depending on individual diagnoses;
    • design a simple model of rehabilitation research based on the findings of the scientific methodology;
    • apply ethical principles in working with patients and positively motivate them during rehabilitation;
    • argue in a methodological way and with the use of relevant knowledge in favor of selected therapeutic rehabilitation procedures in a patient with a specific diagnosis.

  • Regulated Professions
    • Physiotherapist
  • Practical Training

    The obligatory part of the program is a professional practice and according to the law the bachelor study must include at least 1 600 h. Student of the Physiotherapy program at the Faculty of Medicine MU has a total of 1,872.5 hours of practice, which consists of exercises and 12 weeks of continuous professional practice.

    The teaching of practical skills of specific subjects is distributed in each year in specialized subjects.

    The practical skills of the first year are focused on the teaching of investigation and treatment methods on healthy individuals - listeners. This means that in a small group the students acquire manual skills, knowledge of the techniques of investigating the systems of the locomotive system and its tissues; they also apply motion therapy, general and reflex massage, special techniques (ball training) and physical therapy. For manual experience, they work under the guidance of the teacher with the patient.

    The second-year student applies the skills acquired in the first year in patients, he also practices new skills and movement therapy. He studies clinical trials, therapeutic procedures in patients and their methodical rehabilitation methods - therapeutic physical education at the patient's bed with surgical, traumatological, orthopedic, internal and neurological diseases. Furthermore, he is familiar with functional disorders in patients and treatment of functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system using "soft techniques".

    The third year student applies the skills acquired in 1st and 2nd year at the patient's bed - examination of the locomotor system, kinesiological analysis, therapeutic procedures in patients. Special techniques (eg Kabat, Bobath) and their use are demonstrated at the patient's bed, the listener can be directly acquainted with the effectiveness of the treatment procedures in the indicated patients.

    The bachelor will apply the practical skills of a particular disease and patient; the result of practical skills is written in case studies as part of a bachelor's thesis. In the final state examination, the practical skills must be shown before a SZZ by a commission to a particular patient.

  • Goals of Theses

    Objectives of Final Theses

    The objectives of final theses are in accordance with the aims of the Physiotherapy study programme. Students usually select topics they have encountered during their studies or clinical placements, or issues related to physiotherapy, rehabilitation, and the professional practice of a physiotherapist.

    By completing their final thesis, students demonstrate their ability to work independently with scholarly sources, define a research problem, set research objectives and questions, choose appropriate research methods, analyse and interpret collected data, and formulate conclusions and recommendations for clinical physiotherapy practice.

    Recommended approaches for the empirical part of the final thesis include, in particular:

    -a literature review with analytical processing of scientific sources,

    -development of educational and informational materials for patients or physiotherapists,

    -a case report or case study,

    -quantitative or qualitative research in the field of physiotherapy, rehabilitation, or related disciplines.

    Structure and Formal Requirements

    The structure of the final thesis follows clearly defined rules, and ethical and legal aspects must be observed throughout the process. The author of the thesis is fully responsible for ensuring compliance with these requirements.

    At Masaryk University, a unified Final Thesis Template is used, which is accompanied by detailed Guidelines for the Template. Both documents are available electronically in the Information System of Masaryk University and on the Faculty of Medicine website in the section Students – Completion of Studies – State Final Examinations.

    Detailed requirements for the formal layout of bachelor’s and master’s theses are specified in the Directive of the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University No. 2/2020 (Guidelines for the formal requirements of bachelor’s and master’s theses prepared at the Faculty of Medicine, MU).

    Additionally, students of the Physiotherapy programme have access to the Methodology for Preparing Final Theses in Selected Non-Medical Health Fields, which provides specific recommendations, structure, and evaluation criteria for this discipline.

    Submission and Evaluation of the Thesis

    The final version of the thesis must be uploaded by students to the Information System of Masaryk University, where it remains archived.

    The evaluation of final theses is carried out by the thesis supervisor and the opponent using assessment templates available in the Information System.

  • Access to Further Studies

    After successful admission, the student can continue to attend the post-graduate master program of Physiotherapy at the Faculty of Medicine at MU and other universities.
