  Binding structure of the doctoral project as part of the application to the doctoral studies in ethnology:

  • 1. Name
  • 2. Aims of the project
  • 3. Description of the project, its justification, definition of the research question
  • 4. Summary of the current state of knowledge, comments on the actuality of the problem in the context of current ethnological research
  • 5. Expected methods used in the project
  • 6. Bibliography of relevant scientific works on the chosen issue (in the case of historiographical focus of the thesis also an overview of the source base)

    Documents for the admission procedure must be inserted into the e-application (rubric “Documents”) by 30 April. Applicants are required to include their full name and application number on all attached documents.

    The entrance examination will be held in two rounds. The first round will be held remotely, based on the assessment of the supplied documents for the admission procedure. The second round will be held in person, in the form of an oral discussion.

    Notice: A poof of completion of a Master’s degree programme (officially certified copy of the diploma, in the case of education obtained abroad also the so-called recognition) shall be submitted by the accepted applicants upon enrolment in the studies. For the entrance examination, a proof of completion of a Master’s degree programme is not required.

Pass/fail line: 75 points (out of 100). The applicant is assessed in the following areas: the doctoral thesis project - max. 50 points, motivation - max. 25 points, professional readiness - max. 25 points).

Doctoral study of ethnology is concentrated on the development of students' scientific and academic potential, and it is aimed at the preparation of research fellows with high level of professional erudition. Within their doctoral study, the students are lead to independent and original scientific research that indicates potential to be applied at national and international levels. The result of this systematic preparation consists in acquiring the capabilities for qualified and specialized academic and scientific work at academic, scientific, and professional institutions, which allows the students to find employment in a wide spectrum of humanities and social sciences, public administration bodies, mass media, creative and cultural industry, and other institutions focussed on culture and cultural heritage, identity, and ethnic processes.

The study is drawn up so that the student can apply and develop his/her theoretical and methodological knowledge in a creative way. Emphasis is put on his/her own scientific work under the leadership of a supervisor and on regular methodological courses, where topics and methodology are discussed within a wide group of experts. The teaching also includes regular lectures given by foreign specialists. Regular presentations on scholarly forums, and publication of partial results of scientific work are a matter of course. A study stay abroad is an integral part of the study. The doctoral study is concluded with a dissertation that features an autonomous research performance, which is not only based on the original approach to a unique topic, but which also corresponds to an adequate theoretical and methodological embedding.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• well versed in basic realia of traditional culture's historical level, contemporary ethno-cultural traditions, identities and ethnic issues including the culture of everyday life within the context of popular and mass culture
• conduct an advanced level of independent ethnological research and, within it, to creatively solve serious scientific issues, to develop methodological procedures, and to define theoretical models
• produce scholarly profiled outcomes based on the analysis of acquired data
• reflect ongoing domestic and foreign methodological trends in his/her research and publications, and to take into consideration all inter- and transdisciplinary ties that enrich the scientific and research process
• use his/her theoretical, methodological, and knowledge potential in domestic and foreign memory, scientific and university institutions, incl. non-governmental non-profit sector, public administration, local authorities, and further institutions with

Taking into consideration their acquired knowledge, experience and methodological training, the graduates from the programme have sufficient professional competences to find employment as research fellows or experts in institutions that develop basic and applied research in domestic and foreign environment (universities and scientific organizations, memory institutions), in organizations with cultural and educational focus, in public administration and local authorities, and in non-governmental non-profit organizations.

The doctoral study is suggested as a professional preparation for academic practice. For this reason, the formation of doctoral students naturally include practical acquiring of professional competences, which the students acquire during their own research and its treatment, during stays abroad, in their participation in teaching and in leadership of team research, and in other research tasks resolved in training or other relative institutions. The subject of doctoral study focusses on independent preparation of scholarly papers for conferences and publications, on implementation of other forms of disciplinary outcomes, and on the ability to conduct an expert discussions. The structure of the subject also encourages practice within international cooperation. Internal students also become involved, to diverse degree, in teaching at and scientific projects of the Institute.

The dissertation is to crown the doctoral study of ethnology. It is worked out based on conducted own field research, or on treatment of suitable historical and documentation collections. It is to research into new and hitherto untreated themes, and possibly it brings up original and innovative approaches to and interpretations of already existing and formerly discussed topics of the discipline. With regard to relevant domestic and foreign disciplinary discussion, the research must be correspondingly anchored in methodology. The dissertation shall be submitted in three hardback copies, on white A4 paper with paginated pages, and with the volume of 240 to 360 thousand characters (including footnotes, cover sheet, list of content, bibliography, sources, respondents and other sources). The cover sheet that is to include the name of university, faculty, institute, study programme, dissertation, author, supervisor, possibly also consultant, and year of submission is a binding part of author's manuscript. Furthermore, the dissertation must include author's declaration about the originality of his/her dissertation, the list of content, the bibliography, and the list of sources, respondents and other sources used. The student regularly discusses the arrangement and text of the dissertation with his/her supervisor.
