Degree programme objectives

Students of the Master’s degree study programme in Culture Management will be acquainted with the problems of economics, law, art, and other aspects of the functioning of cultural institutions, including public economics, economics of culture, and legal ethics. Orientation towards the understanding of both public and private support of cultural nonprofit organizations, i.e. cultural politics, is part of the studies. Students will be taught accounting, marketing, public relations, copyright, and cultural business management with its specific economic and management characteristics.

  • Information on entrance examinations designed for this degree programme

    Deadline for submitting applications: January 1 - April 30

    Who the programme is intended for: The programme is intended for graduates of any Bachelor’s degree programme.

    Subject matter of the entrance examination: The entrance test consists of thirty questions, which are based on the requirements for the Bachelor’s state examination of the programme Combined Art Studies. In the test, the questions focus mainly on the personalities mentioned in these areas and on their works, as well as on the concepts mentioned in these areas. Thus, a general knowledge of the history of fine arts, architecture, music, theatre, literature, and film and the ability to date them in a given time period is expected. The classification of artists' names in terms of style, tendency, or period, a brief definition of their work and time classification. Great attention is also paid to testing the applicants’ knowledge of current cultural events, as well as personalities from Czech and international culture. Orientation in the current cultural environment, knowledge of the basic institutions of Czech cultural life, knowledge of the founding role of municipalities, regions, and the state, and institutions in culture are expected. The length of the test is 60 minutes.

    Waiver of the entrance examination: The entrance examination can be waived for applicants who have passed the Bachelor’s examination in the fields/programmes guaranteed by the Department of Musicology at FA MU with an excellent (A) or very good (B) result. Applicants can ask for a waiver for the entrance examination via the e-application form, section "Application for waiver of the entrance examination".

  • Learning Outcomes

    After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

    • solve problems of economics, law, art, and other aspects of the functioning of cultural institutions (praxeology, economics of culture, and legal ethics)
    • understand both public and private support of cultural nonprofit organizations
    • comprehend accounting, marketing, public relations, copyright, and cultural business management with all its specific demands
    • reflect the actual cultural and social events and their adaptation to practical use for the organizational and management work in the profiled art institutions
    • independently and creatively work in the fields of strategic planning and project management in cultural institutions as well as in their own artistic projects
    • to reflect the issue of Czech Culture in international contexts
    • to develop and promote artistic and cultural operations
  • Occupational Profiles of Graduates

    Graduates of the Master’s degree study programme in Culture Management will be ready to practically use their knowledge in the artistic, economic, and legal aspects of the functioning of cultural institutions, as well as in national culture politics and its system modifications in the Euro-American background.

    Thanks to the combination of the theoretical knowledge of art and practically oriented economic, legal, and praxeological directions, graduates will be able to fulfil all the conditions for the execution of organizational and management tasks at different cultural and social posts in both public and private institutions.

  • Rules and Conditions for the Creation of a Study Plan

    The standard duration of studies is two years, degree conferred: Master’s (Mgr.)

    For admittance to the final state examination, students must earn a total of 120 ECTS credits for the single-subject study (or proportional number ECTS for the maior study if Culture Management is the major study programme or proportional number for the double-subject study if Culture Management is the minor study programme) in type A/required, type B/selective, and type C/elective courses. A course in a world language and a traineeship are both required.

    During the course of their studies, students should follow the study catalogue valid for their year of matriculation. The study catalogues for the individual years of matriculation are available at the Faculty of Arts website.

  • Practical Training

    Practical training is in the form of a 80-hour traineeship in a cultural institution as offered by a lector or chosen by the student. The course is intended for better understanding of the operation of cultural institutions.

  • Goals of Theses

    The standard scope of the diploma thesis as well as the formal requirements are in accordance with the requirements of the Study Regulations. The themes of the final thesis cover a wide range of issues related to the operation of cultural facilities, the functioning of markets in the field of culture, the issue of institutional evolution of cultural facilities. Thanks to the wide range of specialists and the high diversity of the qualifications of students from bachelor's degree, it is possible to work on diploma theses in a wide range of methods, from the use of archive resources to the application of statistical analyzes. Students should demonstrate the ability to critically work with expert texts and available data, formulate their own reasoned opinion on controversial issues and find answers to problematic questions or confirm or rebut the established hypotheses. Instructions for state final examinations are regulated by the Dean's Directive No. 6/2017 - On State Final Examinations at MU Faculty of Arts.

  • Access to Further Studies

    After completion of the Bachelor's studies, it is possible to continue further studies in any Master's degree programme (after satisfying the admission requirements).
