Physiology, Pathological Physiology, Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry

The applicant should submit an e-application form and pay the application fee. Once this is done, the administrator of the Office for Research and Quality will download the application together with all enclosed documents and send it to the right study programme admission committee. It is necessary to complete the recognition of previous education, as mentioned on the webpage for applicants (https://www.med.muni.cz/en/research-and-development/phd-studies/for-applicants) in the part "Admission Information". This procedure can take some time (months) to be completed. The admission committee evaluates the materials which the applicant has attached to the application: curriculum vitae, an essay – a motivation letter, a diploma and transcript of courses taken, two letters of recommendation from previous teachers. We recommend to the applicant to prepare these documents very carefully, as it is on the basis of these documents that the applicant will be invited to the second round of interviews. The entrance examination in the form of an interview conducted before the admission committee; upon prior agreement, it can be held using videoconferencing technology. In the admission process, the applicant can obtain a maximum of 100 points. To be accepted, it is necessary to receive at least 85 points. An admission committee evaluates a presentation of an applicant during the exam. However, the final decision has to be made by the dean of faculty. If the result is "accepted", the administrator of the Office for Research and Quality prepares admission documents.

The doctoral degree programme develops the skills of excellent master's degree graduates of medical, veterinary, pharmaceutical or natural science disciplines. Those skills include the ability to perform independent creative tasks in the area of research, development, and implementing clinical applications. Therefore the studies are focused on the deepening of their theoretical foundations and introducing them to modern discoveries in the fields of Biochemistry, Physiology, Pathophysiology, and Biology while focusing on practical applications in medical sciences.

The graduates of the field are encouraged to continue their scientific-pedagogic careers at universities or clinical medicine fields. They can also work in research institute laboratories focusing on Biochemistry, Physiology, and all related sciences, as independent developer staff.

There are two specialisations available in the programme - Physiology and Pathological Physiology, and Medical Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Absolvent/ka je po úspěšném ukončení studia schopný/á

• plan and design experiments, evaluate and statistically process the results, and interpret the results in larger contexts
• systematically seek out scientific literature and actively apply the discovered information in the development of their scientific endeavours;
• have an understanding of the methods used in their discipline and independently implement new procedures and methods;
• discover new scientific issues and design proposals for their solution through grant projects;
• prepare journal publications and academic presentations for conferences, both in the Czech and English language;
• adhere to the ethical principles of scientific pursuits and understand the specific ethical aspects of their discipline;
• perform basic pedagogical skills and become involved in the lecturing of pre-graduate students;
• apply the principles of proper inter-personal communication while emphasizing the specific needs of physicians, lecturers, and researchers.

The graduates of the field are encouraged to continue their scientific-pedagogic careers at universities, specifically in Theoretical Medicine institutes or in clinical discipline areas of faculty hospitals. They can also work in the laboratories of research institutes focusing on Biochemistry, Physiology, and every related science. The students will be able to continue their scientific pursuits in the areas of basic and applied research.
