Hlavním cílem monografie je interpretace "estetiky malebna" s důrazem na estetiku jako filosofickou disciplínu a s ohledem změn postojů k přírodě. Text je rozdělen na tři sekce: v první části je představen postoj k přírodě v 17. a 18. století v britské kultuře s důrazem na ocenění „divokých“ scenérií a též britské filosofické myšlení v oblasti estetiky přírody. V druhé části jsou představeny a analyzovány teorie hlavních teoretiků malebna – W. Gilpina, U. Price, R. P. Knighta a H. Reptona. Třetí část knihy se zabývá přístupem ke konceptu malebna v britské kultuře 19. století (např. J. Ruskinem), ale též v německojazyčném (např. u J. G. Sulzera či H. Wölfflina) a českojazyčném prostředí (zejm. u J. Durdíka a O. Hostinského). Poslední kapitola pojednává o vlivu teorie malebna na myšlení 20. století (např. u N. Pevsnera).

Main goal of the monograph is to interpret the "picturesque aesthetics" with an accent on the aesthetic as the discipline of philosophy and changing attitudes towards nature. The text is devided into the three sections: in first part is introduced an attitude towards nature during the 17th and 18th century in the British culture with an accent on the rise of appreciation of "wild" sceneries and British philosophical thinking in the field of aesthetics of nature. In the second part is introduced and analysed theories of the main theoreticians of picturesque - W. Gilpin, U. Price, R. Payne Knight and H. Repton. The third part this book is dealing with subsequent approaches towards picturesque in British culture of the 19th century (e. g. J. Ruskin), but also in German (e. g. Wölfflin) and Czech speaking countries (J. Durdík, O. Hostinský). Last chapter of this part deals with the picturesque in the concepts of the 20th century thinking (e. g. N. Pevsner).
