Die Vielfältigkeit des Begriffs Bruderschaft (confraternitas, fraternitas, congregatio) zeugt von gewissen Schwierigkeiten mit einer eindeutigen Auslegung, zugleich aber vom archetypischen Charakter dieses Begriffs. Hier wird die uralte Bestrebung, eine wirklich vollkommene Gemeinschaft der christlichen Liebe zu schaffen, widergespiegelt: Ubi caritas est vera, Deus ibi est (Antiphon am Gründonnerstag). Diese Gemeinschaft musste sich, gerade in einem nominell christlichen Milieu, immer irgendwie abgrenzen gegen die Gesamtheit, es handelt sich einfach um einen Zusammenschluss – in der neuen Matrikel (um 1681) der marianischen Bruderschaft aus dem schlesischen Städtchen Hlučín (Hultschin) (1516 gegründet) lesen wir, dass die Konfraternität die stürmischen Zeiten von Krieg und Konfessionsverwirrung als ein verschlossenes Gärtchen und ein versiegelter Brunnen überlebt habe.

Bratrstvo jako symbol usilování o spasení vlastní duše se v souvislostech raného novověku, oné neodkouzlené doby, může jevit jako něco nadbytečného. Vždyť je zde přece farnost jako základní a zásadní prostředí společenské organizace ve většinově křesťanském prostředí, přičemž v českých zemích doby pobělohorské náleží tento monopol církvi římskokatolické. Křesťany, katolíky jsou tedy všichni řádní členové společnosti. Tato nařízená příslušnost k jednomu náboženskému systému či konkrétnímu vyznání má však daleko k rovině osobní zbožnosti, k níž se váže věta „V bratrstvu býti jest znamení, že pečujem o spasení.“

Religious confraternities represent an almost unknown concept at the present time. In the past, however, they formed an essential part of Christian culture from Medieval Times up to the Enlightenment. The English historian John Bossy called them the social miracle. This exhibition and the catalogue draw upon the only recently commenced research into this phenomenon and its influential role in the development of Early Modern European culture. It is an attempt at reconstructing the vanished world of religious confraternities in Moravia in the 17th and 18th centuries. The dissolution of these communities due to Josephine reforms resulted in the confiscation of the material property of the confraternities, which can today be perceived as objects d’art, as well as the extinction of the autonomous and nearly omnipresent community of believers.
