Abstract
Adolescence is a period of transition - biological, cognitive, and social (Hill, 1983; Steinberg, 2008), and the Internet has become an important context within which youth deal with the changes occurring in their life. Perhaps the most fundamental transition of adolescence is the onset of puberty and subsequent sexual development, the focus of this book. In this chapter, we describe some of the different ways that adolescents use the Internet and newer tools to explore their sexuality and we point out the challenges and opportunities that they encounter as they do so. First, we present our co-construction model, which we have proposed to understand the relation of adolescents’ online behavior to their development. Then we describe the characteristics of online environments that are relevant to the expression and exploration of sexuality online. Finally, we describe the different ways that adolescents engage in online sexual exploration in the service of their sexual development.
